St Joseph Regional HIGH SCHOOL'S 2015/2016 musical
“URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL”
Each year choosing the St Joseph Regional Musical is an extremely difficult task. There are so many factors that are considered, and following the success of recent years and the fact that we have so many talented, lead-worthy male students, the musical chosen needs to be a very special show. I considered many musicals to determine if they met this criteria while being a good fit for the talented students we have this year. I also felt it needs to be the year to lighten up the subject matter, and do a show that has some good laughs while still delivering an important message. Nine years ago (2007), we produced such a show. At the time, most audience members had never seen this show performed and had a fresh genuine reaction – they laughed often and loved the show.
Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Urinetown: The Musical.
Urinetown: The Musical is a satirical comedy musical from 2001, with music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Hollmann and Greg Kotis, and book by Kotis. It satirizes the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, and municipal politics. The show also parodies musicals such as The Threepenny Opera, The Cradle Will Rock and Les Misérables, and the Broadway musical itself as a form. Urinetown: The Musical was nominated for 10 Drama Desk Awards and 9 Tony Awards – winning 3 Tony’s Awards – BEST BOOK OF A MUSICAL, BEST ORIGINAL SCORE AND BEST DIRECTION OF A MUSICAL. The characters of Bobby Strong and Hope Cladwell were included on New York Theatre Monthly's list of "The 100 Greatest Roles in Musical Theatre".
I am so thrilled that we will be bringing such an original, clever and poignant show to St Joe's with so many talented students performing in it. Urientown: The Musical has great production numbers, lots of catchy tunes, and many characters giving a lot of students a chance to shine.
AUDITIONS will be on Oct 19th (7 PM), 20th ( 7 PM), and 21st ( 6 and 7:30 PM). Additional information will be sent out in the weeks ahead and will be posted on the SJR Theater Website and Facebook page (www.sjrtheater.com; SJR Theater).
With a show like Urinetown: The Musical, we have the opportunity to really entertain people and perform something that will be new to most of the audience. With the enormous number of talented students coupled with our incredible production team: Ed, Frank, JayZee, Brian, Tammy, Thomasina, Wendy, Curtis and Steve, the 2015-2016 St Joseph Regional HS Musical, Urinetown: The Musical has the chance to be one of best St Joe's musicals of all time.
I am also happy to announce that we have been granted permission and the rights to perform “West Side Story” as the 2016-2017 St Joe’s School Musical.
I hope you get off to a good start to the school year and I look forward to beginning the exciting journey of Urinetown: The Musical with you this fall. - John T. Asselta
