Set in the 1930s, Lend Me a Tenor is a madcap screwball comedy that takes place when Tito Merelli, a fiery-tempered and world famous Italian opera superstar, arrives in Cleveland, Ohio to make his debut with the local opera and promptly goes missing. To save the show, Henry Saunders, the producer, conspires to cover for Tito’s absence by calming his hot-blooded wife and distracting his most passionate fans. Chaos then truly begins on an operatic level.  What follows is a laugh-out-loud chain reaction of mistaken identity, slapstick plot twists, and rapid-fire mayhem.

Lend Me a Tenor made its Broadway debut on March 2, 1989, at the Royale Theatre and ran for 476 performances.  Another successful 2001 Broadway revival followed along with a recent regional theatre production at Paper Mill Playhouse.  There have been many revivals, and regional theatre and international productions. This show is a favorite choice for theatre programs.

The show was nominated for nine Tony Awards and received two for Best Actor and Direction. It was also nominated for six Drama Desk Awards and won three.  A London Olivier Award followed for Best Comedy of the Year.
